AMAAR KHEL-AMAAR USAV (in English it is OUR GAMES-OUR JOY and in Hindi it is HAMARA KHEL-HAMARA ANAND) -a carnival of Indigenous Sports, Culture and Rural Tourism is a noble initiative of Assam Traditional Sports and Dragon Boat Association. The single objective of holding the carnival was to promote the indigenous Sports and Culture of Assam and North East and make Assam a Tourist destination.
The Traditional/Indigenous Sports has been an integral part of the Assamese society. Since time immemorial the Traditional sports had played a pivotal role in all the communities of our society. But, in this fast moving world of machines the traditional sports, art and culture are not being given due respect and weightage. However, recently, the Govt. of India has decided to develop these sports through Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyan and tape the talents and improve the quality of sports in the country.
Keeping in mind its importance in our society and to take all kinds of traditional sports of Assam in to the right direction and extend all possible care for its development, a group of dedicated sports enthusiasts and social workers of different parts of the state in the month of December,2007, got together at Hajo – the hub of Assamese traditions, formed an association giving its name as ‘Assam Traditional Sports & Dragon Boat Association’ with its Head Office at Hajo and City Office at Guwahati. In all practical purposes the association shall also be referred to as “Assam Traditional Sports Association” and started its activities from January 15,2008.
It has been decided to include in its fold the internationally popular traditional sports the Dragon Boat Racing(like our Traditional Boat Racing), considering the fact that it is the only traditional sports recognaised world-wide, through which our traditional sports will also have an international exposure and affiliation. The association will also take all possible care to develop the traditional art and culture of Assam. The activities of the Association will mainly be in the rural areas for which it will establish its District Units in a phased manner and include district representatives in the committee.
As a first step, the Association has drawn up its initial action plan to create an archive by making list, visually record and take history of all kind of traditional sports which are being practiced by different communities and at different areas of Assam. For that, the Association has appealed all concerned to help, contribute by way of their information, data, record and suggestions on traditional sports, art & culture of Assam. The Association will organize Inter School Tournaments, Rural Festivals for proper involvement of the rural masses and development of the traditional activities as well as community development programmes in the respective areas. The Association will also approach the Central and State Government for its all round support for the cause.
